“Tinder for sperm donors”: a reality check on Y Factor for Austria

Today, DER STANDARD, together with the Spanish paper El Confidencial, reports on Y Factor, a new app for private sperm donation. The article also mentions our platform, as the option that already exists in Austria. A good occasion to look at the app soberly: what does it do, what does it cost, and what does it mean for you in Austria?

What is Y Factor?

Behind Y Factor stands Ole Schou, founder of Cryos, the world's largest sperm bank. The app launched in mid-2025 in the UK and Denmark and has been available EU-wide since autumn 2025. The mechanics are familiar from dating apps: browse profiles, like, match, chat. The difference: when creating a profile you state how the donation should happen (clinic, home insemination, or intercourse) and what role the donor wants to play later, from donor-only to co-parent.

The numbers for Austria

Here it gets sobering. According to DER STANDARD, exactly 62 users from Austria were registered in August 2026, ten of them verified donors. The app itself sends new users an email saying the service will be available here “soon” and suggests widening the search radius.

What does the app really cost?

Y Factor advertises a free start. The “Explore” base tier is noticeably limited, though: few likes, no donation history, no extended filters. The full feature set sits in the subscription, €29.99 a month for recipients, €19.99 for donors. The option to request an ID check is part of the paid package too.

A commercial provider is free to do that. You should just know it before you invest time in a profile. With us, use costs nothing, and selfie-and-ID verification is standard for every profile, not part of a subscription.

Paid donation? Not in Austria.

One detail from the article deserves special attention: on Y Factor, donors can state whether they want to donate for free or for compensation. In Austria this choice does not exist. The Reproductive Medicine Act (FMedG) bans selling semen and commercial brokering; a private donation must remain unpaid. The fair objection: safety

The STANDARD article is not an advert, neither for Y Factor nor for us. It names the risks of private sperm donation clearly: no mandatory health testing as in a clinic, open questions around consent and the child's welfare. A Spanish expert calls the bioethical risks “enormous”.

We take that criticism seriously instead of talking it away. A private donation shifts responsibility to you; that is the price of the freedom it offers.
